FAQ
Striping:
What is parking lot striping?
Parking lot striping is the process of painting lines, markings, and symbols on a parking lot's surface to designate parking spaces, traffic lanes, and other important information.
Why is parking lot striping important?
Striping encourages safe and organized parking, traffic flow, and compliance with local regulations. It also enhances the overall appearance of the parking lot. Line striping maximizes parking efficiency by fitting more cars into a given space. Bright, crisp parking lot lines add dramatically to the curb appeal of a property or business.
What should we do to prepare our parking lot for line striping?
Have any plant material, leaves, dirt, gravel or debris removed from the parking lot prior to the line striping contractor's arrival. The area to be striped should be clean, washed if necessary. Your landscape maintenance service can take care of this. The striping will come out better and cost less overall.
How are the old lines prepared prior to restriping?
The old lines are scoured with a special steel broom to remove any loose paint or material, then blown clean with an air blower.
Is it possible to straighten existing, crooked lines?
Yes, in most cases, a new wider line can cover the crooked, or curved line. This does require extra time and cost.
When should you crack seal the parking lot, before or after line striping?
If you're considering crack sealing the parking lot, do this before any line striping work.
How often should I restripe my parking lot?
Restriping your parking lot is generally recommended every 1-2 years, but the frequency may vary based on factors like snow plowing, traffic volume and climate conditions.
What are the different types of line striping jobs?
There are primarily three: Restripe, or going over existing lines that are worn but still legable. Restripe over sealcoat; assuming the old lines can be found, and new layout, or measuring and mapping a new paving job. A new layout is the most expensive as it requires starting from scratch, or plans, and takes the most time and expertise.
What types of paint are used for parking lot striping?
Line striping paints are made for that purpose and nclude water-based latex and solvent-based paint. Whenever possible, United Line Striping uses water-based paint which is more environmentally friendly. Solvent based paints are typically used in colder weather.
Can I choose custom colors for parking lot stripes?
Custom colors are possible, but it's advisable to consult local regulations first. Most areas have specific color requirements for handicap spaces, fire lanes, and more. Custom colors will add significantly to the job cost.
What are ADA-compliant parking spaces?
ADA-compliant parking spaces are designed to meet the accessibility requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). They include features like accessible signage, slopes, and van-accessible spaces.
How can I ensure my parking lot striping complies with local regulations?
Consult your local municipal Building Inspector, and work with a professional striping contractor who is familiar with local requirements.
What is the average cost of parking lot striping?
The cost varies based on the size of the lot, the complexity of the layout, and the type of paint used. Most Line Striping Companies in Utah have a minimum charge of five to seven hundred dollars for small jobs to several thousand dollars for large jobs. If the lines are gone, hidden under sealcoat, or to measure and map a brand new parking lot; this will add to the cost when compared to a restripe.
Can I stripe my own parking lot?
While it's possible for small areas, it's recommended to hire a professional striping contractor for accuracy, durability, and compliance with regulations. Small carts that utilize spray cans are available for DIY'ers. However, this paint wears away quickly; the best paints are applied with expensive, professional equipment.
How long does it take for freshly striped paint to dry?
Drying times vary based on the type of paint used and environmental conditions. On a warm day, Latex striping paint tacks up in a few minutes and fully cures overnight.
Do I need to close my parking lot during striping?
In many cases, sections of the parking lot can be temporarily closed while striping work is in progress to ensure safety. Your contractor can help with scheduling to minimize disruptions. Arrangements can be made for weekends and after hours.
Can striping be done in cold or rainy weather?
Ideal conditions for striping are dry and mild temperatures. Cold or rainy weather can affect the quality of the striping, so it's best to schedule the work during nice weather.
Does sealcoat need to cure before striping the parking lines?
Some sealcoats need to cure for different time perods depending on their composition. This can range from zero to ninety days for best results. If not cured, the paint may wear prematurely. Consult your seal coat professional for this information.
Can I get a diagram of my property showing the parking lot lines?
It's best to obtain this from a Google Earth picture, or contact a Landscape Architect. Generally, Line stripers don't provide site plans.
Your specific questions and answers may vary based on your location and project details, so it's important to consult with a line striping contractor for accurate guidance.
